Paper Quilling

As we continue our study of Colonial Times, we took up the fine art of Paper Quilling this week!

"Quilling is the art of curling strips of paper into interesting designs. The craft got its name from the way paper strips were curled around bird quills. Colonial artists decorated candle holders and tea trays with pretty quilling." taken from book Colonial Kids, by Laurie Carlson.
The boys did a wonderful job, though this task is neither easy or quick. It takes a lot of patience and time to complete a nice project. Take a look!

C2 hasn't finished his yet, thus no pictures of him! We'll get them posted when he is done. Not sure if you can make it out, but C1 made a ladybug. L is called "Banana" and you can see he added extra elements to his. Wasn't sure he'd be able to do it, but he did great!

Next week we make trunks!

I am so happy so many kids who are home schooled are learning about quilling; most public schools don't even touch on it in art class. I noticed a book in your blog "Colonial Kids". Did that also feature quilling? I have a web site and we try to kep current with all of the publications about quilling, so I'd be interested in learning the author and publisher. If you decide to continue with quilling we have lots of free patterns (pretty basic)on the free pattern page at www.Whimsiquills.com; also free refernce amterials and instruction sheets.
