October 31st is the anniverary of the Reformation of the church. It was on October 31st, 1517 that Martin Luther, an Augustinian Monk, posted his 95 theses on the Castle Church door in Wittenburg, Germany. In it he challenged practices in the church such as the sale of indulgences, a practice in which people paid money to the church in exchange for promises that their loved ones would be freed from purgatory sooner rather than later. Later he translated the scriptures to German and had them printed for the common people to read. (This was a wonderful follow up to our study last week on Johann Gutenburg and the printing press!)
Last week we studied this period in history by reading lots of books about Martin Luther and even having a "Reformation Dinner"! I took a stab at making a German meal, since that is where he was from, though I have never cooked anything German in my life. It actually turned out okay. I got the recipes from another homeschool blogger site. We had Wiener Schnitzel (made with pork instead of veal), Kaesspaetzele, a German style macaroni and cheese, and apple strudel. Below is a picture of C2 making the strudel and having fun with the apples! He has fun with everything! We finished the study by watching a movie on Martin Luther.
It was a fascinating time in history which showcases the bravery of a man willing to stand for Christ and on His Word. It is our prayer that our boys will embrace God's truth with the same conviction.
